What are essential oils?

Essential oils are organic, nature friendly, volatile liquids which are extracted from various parts of the plants and trees like seeds, leaves, barks, roots, flowers, woods, etc.,. 


It traps in the entire essence and flavor of a whole plant and hence the name "essential oil". 


It has got a more powerful smell than the usual oils.There are two different ways of extracting essential oils:-

  • Steam distillation
  • Cold pressing

Some manufacturers may add carrier oils to dilute the concentration of essential oils as to increase the quantity. If so then it is no more a pure one.

 

What are carrier oils?

It is the base oil.They are extracted from vegetables, nuts, seeds and various other parts of the plant.They have different density levels.They are used to dilute essential oils.


Where are essential oil used?

A mix of essential oil and carrier oil is widely used in aromatherapy, beauty and cosmetic industries.They are used for various skin and hair treatments. Essential oils are incorporated in the making of beauty products such as perfumes, hair oils, creams, moisturizers, face mists, scrubs, serums, etc.,.

How to use essential oils?

As already mentioned, essential oils contain active and strong components. It should never be used or applied directly on your skin.  

If you are not very sure about the usage please consult a specialist for directions. 

There are different proportions for various kinds of usage. Remember to mix your essential oil along with a carrier oil. If not it irritates your skin and causes rashes sometimes.


Who should not use essential oils?

Essential oils are so pure. So we need to be careful while using essential oils for children and elderly people.

They might not be able to bear the brisk fragrance. 

It may bring tears, cause rashes, allergies, itching and nausea.

Can we consume essential oils?

No!! We should never consider consuming essential oils at any cost though it is pure. It is never advised.

How to store essential oil?

Essential oils should never be stored under direct sunlight and heat. 

It's always safe to store it in wooden shelf or wooden case which improves its shelf life. 

Essential oils should always be contained in dark glass bottles as it is volatile.

Patch Test:

Pure essential oils are very sensitive. To be on the safer side always rub few drops of essential oils behind your ears or inside of your wrist. 

Wait for few seconds. If it does not cause any reactions, you are good to go.


Interesting Facts:

As we all know the basic quality of an oil lies in its density. But as of essential oil it does not feel like an oil. It's much more lighter in density and easily mixes with other carrier oils. Hence it is non sticky and readily absorbed by the skin.
